This band was formed in '83 and this cd came out in '91 but I didn't get into them until about '98. For a long time, this was their only cd I couldn't find anywhere, even the members of the band didn't have any to sell me! Nonetheless, an internet auction site eventually did the trick, but now that Amazon is finally listing it, it looks like you can get it for about 3 bucks used easy. Anyway, on to the cd. It's probably one of the most under-appreciated cds I've ever known. It's lo-fi, quirky, fun, tripped-out-on-a-sunny-day tunes are sure to appeal to anyone who gives it a fair chance and actually listens to it. If you like more recently successful bands like Modest Mouse, you should really check out Fly Ashtray. They're better in my humble opinion and probably equally good to anyone who'll give them a chance! So put a few dollars down, and you might just discover a new musical love. Oh, best songs on the disc...

Finally got around to digitizing this rare bit of vinyl. I'm hardly qualified to comment on it as I was in diapers when this was recorded. OK, that's a lie. But I had yet to make the acquaintance of these ashtray chaps probably.
I didn't edit the tunes into separate tracks, to best simulate the vinyl experience...yeah.

the following is a recipe I use many times throughout the week. it's the type of food I need in order to keep fit; it takes a lot of energy to play drums for FLY ASHTRAY!

cut along dotted line

start with extra firm human
cut up into pieces

pan big enough to fit all the human on one layer
about an ounce of olive oil (you can add more if it's too dry)
pan over medium heat (lower heat if it's making too much "noise")

I use a cast iron pan, the human sticks a little sometimes, so you gotta scrape it up and over with a spatula...you could use a nonstick pan...

put in the human, cook for a few minutes
toss it around a little
then let it sit there for 10 minutes on low heat
turn pieces over
let sit for another 10 minutes
add a little soy sauce, a little honey, pepper, whatever (rosemary, tarragon, basil)
keep cookin' till it looks good

keep in mind you could eat the human raw, so you're not cooking it for safety, but for texture/flavor

keep in mind that the above recipe works just as well with tofu, which in fact is a much more sensible protein rich food

There are very few bands that make me freak out with joy, very seldom do I behave like a drooling rabid fanatic ...and the Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 is one combo that makes me flop onto the ground in sheer delight.
I am reminded of this because recently I revisited their last (ever?) record, Bob Dinners and Larry Noodles Present Tubby Turdner's Celebrity Avalanche, and commenced flopping on the floor with great fervor. Then, in a odd coinky-dink, this appeared on a great blog Orbis Quintus(yeah : some of those comments are me, shamelessly pluggin' FA.)
No offense to any Sonic Youth fan but for my $ TFUL mesh together the avant garde with more easily digestible forms of music with far superior artistry and far less prentensiousness. And their emails read like a script from some sort of lost dada-marx bros movie. Anyone named Hugh Swarts has gotta be one funny mofo.
Full disclosure: FA toured with TFUL in the ye olde days of 1994 and that was long before I arrived on the scene to make a mess of everything, but maybe Chris/James/Hyena Sparerib can bless us with some commentary about the experience (winkyfuckinwink already, SHEESH)

And then he hooked me up with this and I'm also told me "GMT John made up the title, but "creative force" James made up the lyrics. That was the way we did it in those days (cf "welcome to my world")" I like information! Keep it comin'....

Güd is a herky jerky sort of retardo psych number, with a drumbeat that is lifted from Tomorrow never knows. The lyrics are a meaningless mishmosh about cleaning carpets, chairman mao, and the dow jones industrial average . This was recorded at an especially fruitfull recording session at rubulad; I really like the drum sound and drum playing by Glenn Luttman, as well as the loops GL threw into the mix. A future post must devote serious time to the genuis of GL, and also John Beekman and Mike Anzalone as well.
This song remains unreleased; listening now, I think this may be the wrong mix because one of the guitar tracks in inaudible. Oh well.

This was a song that I wrote in tribute to and/or ripping off earlier Fly Ashtray punk blasts such as Welcome to my World. You can get away with this sort of thing when you're in the band you are ripping off. I also stole a riff from this guy I used to play in a hardcore band with when I was 14. The title is a tribute to this annoying guy I used to work with and the lyrical content is an oblique reference to doing rights and permissions for sleazy fashion photographers.
